I have had the great pleasure of working with Julie as my costume designer for the best part of the last decade. During that time we’ve collaborated on a variety of projects, both series and movies, and every time Julie has impressed me with her dedication and passion to get the ‘look’ just right. And let’s be honest… it’s all about the ‘look’.
Julie takes the time to absorb the story, understand the characters and get inside their heads. Doesn’t matter if it’s a crazy tear away suit for a comedy gag on a sit com or that perfect prom dress for the climax of the movie, the desire for perfection runs just as high. Indeed, Julie seems at her happiest when ever the challenges are at their greatest. Combine this with a loyal, talented team, a proven track record on how to stretch a buck, a killer sense of humor and you really do have every thing you need in one great package.
Simply stated: Julie is always going to be my first choice as costume designer.
Julie Whitfield has just completed her assignment as Costume Designer on our made for TV movie, “White Lies”, and it is my pleasure to write a reference letter on her behalf.
First and foremost, Julie did a top level, professional job for us. She delivered on time, within budget and with a great deal of creativity.
The script for our project was complicated, jumping from several different time periods and with 47 script days in total. We had 60 lead actors, some with 25 wardrobe changes, and over 1500 extras, all in period clothing, some with multiple wardrobe changes.
The periods ranged from 1980 to 1990 with flashbacks to the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.
Julie has a lot of resources at her fingertips and is able to draw upon a wealth of experience. She had to manufacture 8 different sets of period uniforms for us, including police, court guard and prison uniforms, all from different cities and time periods.
Julie’s department ran efficiently and without any problems. The producers and the director were all delighted with her work, as were the actors with their wardrobe.
At the onset, Julie created an excellent and detailed budget for me and, in fact, came in slightly under budget. Julie is clear thinking, remains calm and has a gentle demeanor.
I would not hesitate to hire her again at the earliest possibility…..
Working with you this year has been an unadulterated joy…You rose to every challenge with extraordinary skills and unabashed creativity. You made working on Hoop Life so much more colorful and fanciful than I ever dreamed it could be…
I am in debt for all the marvelous costumes you created for my episodes and hope sincerely the future holds an opportunity for us to work together again. You are the best!
Thank you so much for your contribution to “The Hairy Bird”. I honestly don’t know how this project could have been done without you. As you know, this show was a huge challenge, 48 cast members, 1800 extras – all in 1963 period clothing! The wardrobe looked beautiful and was on budget. I am still amazed at how you managed to do it.
Obviously the organization in your department was excellent and your commitment and dedication to this project was outstanding. It’s great to have you back in the business.
Good luck on your future projects, I’m sure we will work together again soon.
Once again I have had the pleasure of working with Julie Whitfield. This time over the course of a year, designing costumes for four Children’s TV Series for marblemedia.
From the YTV action series, The Adrenaline Project, to a new animation/live action quiz show, Skatoony, for Teletoon, to the popular TVO series, Taste Buds, and finally the pilot of the children’s morning show, 3 To Get Ready, Julie has come through for us again and again.
Though our budgets and timelines were highly challenging, Julie’s long-standing connections with wholesale suppliers saved us a lot of money (and time) while still giving us the costumes and quality we wanted. And if there were items that couldn’t be purchased, Julie built them from scratch.
The best thing for me though is that I never worry about the wardrobe department when Julie is in charge. She keeps everyone happy and really seems to enjoy her work. I would be pleased to recommend her for any production.
I would like to add my voice of praise and admiration to the many others who have been fortunate enough to work with Julie Whitfield.
As Costume Designer for the pilot/movie of Queer As Folk, Julie brought style, humor, color, authenticity and imagination to a wide range of costumes. She also brought patience, kindness, warmth and a true spirit of collaboration to our many meetings and conversations.
Her contribution was invaluable and helped make Queer As Folk a remarkable project, of which we are all very proud.
